Syrah, or Shiraz, is a red grape variety with controversial origins: some, in fact, believe that its origin is in Iran near the city of Shiraz, while others think that its historical roots are linked to the territory of Syracuse, from which it would then be dispersed before being reintroduced in Italy from neighboring France
This variety is nowadays available in almost all the world’s wine-growing area, in Italy it is grown in Tuscany (with the best results in the DOC Cortona), in Lazio as “Syrah IGP Lazio Red”, in Apulia (Syrah of Tarantino IGT), in Piedmont with DOC Sirah and in Sicily
specially the latter region has best interpreted the Syrah in Italy, vinifying it with the variety Nero d’Avola.
